Readmission after Academic Separation
If you have been academically separated from Purdue and wish to reapply you should review the following information carefully. This material will help you understand the readmission process and requirements to get you back on track.
Readmission is not automatic or guaranteed, and it’s your responsibility to understand and complete all of the steps in the readmission process.
If you’re already on academic notice you will be separated at the end of any fall or spring semester in which your semester and cumulative GPA are less than a 2.0.
- If you have been separated for the first time, you may not reapply to Purdue until you have been away for at least one full semester (fall or spring) and completed at least 12 semester credit hours at another regionally accredited institution. The 12 credit hours must be taken during a single fall or spring academic term. Credit taken during a summer term can be submitted to Purdue for transfer credit evaluation, but a summer term does not count as your semester away from Purdue.
- If you have been separated for the second time, you may not reapply to Purdue until you have been away for at least one full academic year (fall and spring) and completed at least 24 semester credit hours at another regionally accredited institution. At least 12 of these credit hours must be taken during a single fall or spring academic term.
- You cannot enroll at Purdue Univeristy in West Lafayette, Purdue University in Indianapolis, Purdue Northwest, Purdue University Fort Wayne, or a Purdue Polytechnic Statewide location until you have successfully completed the readmission process.
There are several steps you must complete before applying for readmission to Purdue. Use the readmission checklist to understand and complete these steps.
There is no appeal process for academic separation. Make sure all your assigned grades are accurate. If a grade is changed because of a reporting error, your GPA will be recalculated, which may affect the academic separation decision.
You may be eligible for an exception if,
- You have 15 or fewer credit hours to complete your degree and can take all of your remaining courses in a single semester.
- There are extenuating circumstances beyond your control, such as serious health issues.
- You have been away from Purdue for five years or more, at which point you may qualify for academic renewal. However, you will still have to apply for readmission consideration.
Contact admissions@purdue.edu, or call 765-494-1776 if you believe you may qualify for an exception.
If you have doubts about your major or career we recommend that you seek career counseling. Contact Purdue’s Center for Career Opportunities to make an appointment at askcco@purdue.edu or 765-494-3981. This is not required nor is it related to the readmission process.
